Beat the Heat: A Cooling Upgrade You Can Make This Summer

Ductless

It’s spring now, but as we all know, the days of keeping our windows open with no need for air or heat is slim here in Western Pennsylvania.

Bedrooms are starting to feel hot as you try to sleep. Your attic is unbearable to go into. And even your living room feels stuffy.

At Shafer’s HVAC, we’ve been installing and servicing comfort systems for years. When our customers ask us what the most meaningful upgrade they can make before summer hits is, we keep coming back to the same answer, a Mitsubishi Electric ductless mini-split system.

What are the limitations of using forced air for cooling my home?

Most homes in our region were built around a central forced-air system. That means that your furnace and your air conditioner share the same ductwork.

What that isn’t made for are those extra spaces you’ve added to your home. The office addition you had to put on due to a work at home lifestyle; the finished basement you created to have additional entertaining space; and that bathroom you added to your master bedroom, are all part of a system it wasn’t designed to cool (or heat).

You might notice it being much cooler in your basement or much hotter in your bedroom. Closing vents doesn’t seem to fix the problem and all that does is create pressure imbalances that make your system work harder than it should.

It’s just not the attached additions. Sunrooms, garages and anything detached also come into play.

What is a ductless cooling and heating system?

At Shafer’s, we recommend Mitsubishi Electric’s ductless mini-split technology.

A ductless system lets you control certain zones in your home. No two rooms need to be the same. You like it colder in your bedroom, but warmer in your office. Done.

This is great when you want to accommodate the comfort levels of different individuals in your home.

It’s also very efficient. When you run your current system, every room is getting air, even if no one is occupying the space.

Mitsubishi Electric’s systems carry some of the highest Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio 2 (SEER2) ratings in the industry, the current industry standard for measuring AC and heat pump efficiency in the US.

What are the benefits of Mitsubishi Electric’s Cooling Technology?

Shafer’s is a Mitsubishi Electric Diamond Contractor, the highest level of certification the brand offers, and we work with these systems every day.

Inverter-driven compressors. The result is steadier comfort, less energy consumption and less wear on the equipment over time.

Advanced filtration. Mitsubishi Electric’s indoor units include multi-stage filtration systems that capture allergens, dust and other airborne particles as they cool your home.

Heat-pump. It’s not just for cooling, it’s a heat pump, too.

Ultra-quiet operation. Many of Mitsubishi Electric’s indoor units operate as quietly as 19 decibels. Think of a soft whisper to compare.

And for those additions and detached areas we mentioned:

Extending ductwork into a new addition is expensive and doesn’t always work with the current system design. A ductless system uses a single small refrigerant line running through the wall.

In places like your garage, a dedicated mini-split can handle heat from power tools and vehicles, so summers are bearable.

When you work with Shafer’s, you’re getting technicians who have installed and commissioned these systems many times, who understand how to properly size and place equipment for your specific home and usage patterns.

We know how homes in this region are built, how they heat up in summer and what it takes to get them comfortable.

If you’ve been living with a problem space or high utility bills, let’s talk through what a Mitsubishi Electric ductless system could do for you.
